Instant Cookies

I wanted a quick snack, so I took the easy road today... some Pillsbury instant X-Mas cookies. LOL. They are already-made sugar cookies that have a little Christmas tree design on them and all I had to do was pop them in the oven. Confession: the ones on top were pretty and tasted great... the ones underneath were burnt! Not my fault though, my baker's helper today put the second batch on the wrong level of the oven. :( Oh well.

Grandpa's Birthday Cake

Not my best work, but I was pretty pleased with the way this one turned out considering I had to do it in a rush! It is a basic yellow sheet cake (no filling, didn't have time). It is covered in a white fluffy frosting, with a white frosting "ribbon" border. The frog in the corner is store-bought... it's a Coqui frog holding a telephone in one hand and a cigar in the other. The Coqui is a native of my family's country of origin: Puerto Rico... which I thought would be a nice addition to Grandpa's cake in celebration of his 80th birthday because he is all about his country :) I have the Coqui sitting on a marshmallow, which I painted with green frosting... the same green frosting that serves as leaves around the frog's "lily pad". I used blue sugar crystals as the water around the lily pad and I also sprinkled them all over the cake to give it a little pop of color. Finally, in keeping with the ode to Puerto Rico and with the interests of Grandpa for this cake, I added several edible dominoes. Using white fondant and some black piping gel I sculpted and designed each of these precious little dominoes (with a great deal of help from my bestie Diana... thanks girl!). I think the dominoes were a real cool touch! I must say that everyone at Grandpa's 80th birthday party was impressed with how it came out and Grandpa was certainly pleased.

Just For Fun

I found this pic saved to my email. I did this one over the summer of 2009. I was bored one day at home and decided to mess around with different colored fondants and some star cookie cutters. I know the picture is very dim, but you can still see how the cake basically came out. I used a Funfetti cake mix and white frosting on the outside. Though it's hard to tell from the picture, I think the white icing gave a nice contrast to the vibrant colors of the fondant (red, yellow, blue and green). Dang! I just wish I had thought about turning on my FLASH when I took this picture!

My 1st Post!

Hello world, I have arrived! Well, this is my first posting on this blog I have set up and I must admit that so far I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out. Basically I'd like to use this blog as my stepping stone towards some day opening my very own bakery. I will showcase on this blog what I can do with my baking and decorating skills and hopefully you will all enjoy following me on my journey towards making my "sweet" dreams come true! XOXO

Saffron Shop Brooklyn

A new shop Saffron has recently opened in my neighborhood in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The shop sells a mix of items including flowers and vintage clothing. They will also be exhibiting different artists work. They had some great vintage finds and the shop owners were awesome. I will definitely be making another trip to Saffron soon.
